Given a set SS of 2n−12n-1, n∈Nn \in \mathbb{N}, different irrational numbers. Prove that there are nn different elements x1,x2,…,xn∈Sx_1, x_2, \dots, x_n \in S such that for all non-negative rational numbers a1,a2,…,ana_1, a_2, \dots, a_n with a1+a2+⋯+an>0a_1 + a_2 + \cdots + a_n > 0 we have that a1x1+a2x2+⋯+anxna_1 x_1 + a_2 x_2 + \cdots + a_n x_n is an irrational number.

Solution (official)

Let II be the set of irrational numbers, Q\mathbb{Q} – the set of rational numbers, Q+=Q∩[0,∞)\mathbb{Q}^+ = \mathbb{Q} \cap [0,\infty). We work by induction. For n=1n = 1 the statement is trivial. Let it be true for n−1n - 1. We start to prove it for nn. From the induction argument there are n−1n-1 different elements x1,x2,…,xn−1∈Sx_1, x_2, \dots, x_{n-1} \in S such that a1x1+a2x2+⋯+an−1xn−1∈I(1)\tag{1} a_1 x_1 + a_2 x_2 + \cdots + a_{n-1} x_{n-1} \in I for all a1,a2,…,an∈Q+a_1, a_2, \dots, a_n \in \mathbb{Q}^+ with a1+a2+⋯+an−1>0a_1 + a_2 + \cdots + a_{n-1} > 0.

Denote the other elements of SS by xn,xn+1,…,x2n−1x_n, x_{n+1}, \dots, x_{2n-1}. Assume the statement is not true for nn. Then for k=0,1,…,n−1k = 0,1,\dots,n-1 there are rk∈Qr_k \in \mathbb{Q} such that ∑i=1n−1bikxi+ckxn+k=rkfor some bik,ck∈Q+, ∑i=1n−1bik+ck>0.(2)\tag{2} \sum_{i=1}^{n-1} b_{ik} x_i + c_k x_{n+k} = r_k \quad \text{for some } b_{ik}, c_k \in \mathbb{Q}^+,\ \sum_{i=1}^{n-1} b_{ik} + c_k > 0. Also ∑k=0n−1dkxn+k=Rfor some dk∈Q+, ∑k=0n−1dk>0, R∈Q.(3)\tag{3} \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} d_k x_{n+k} = R \quad \text{for some } d_k \in \mathbb{Q}^+,\ \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} d_k > 0,\ R \in \mathbb{Q}. If in (2) ck=0c_k = 0 then (2) contradicts (1). Thus ck≠0c_k \ne 0 and without loss of generality one may take ck=1c_k = 1. In (2) also ∑i=1n−1bik>0\sum\limits_{i=1}^{n-1} b_{ik} > 0 in view of xn+k∈Ix_{n+k} \in I. Replacing (2) in (3) we get ∑k=0n−1dk(−∑i=1n−1bikxi+rk)=Ror∑i=1n−1(∑k=0n−1dkbik)xi∈Q,\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} d_k \left( -\sum_{i=1}^{n-1} b_{ik} x_i + r_k \right) = R \quad \text{or} \quad \sum_{i=1}^{n-1} \left( \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} d_k b_{ik} \right) x_i \in \mathbb{Q}, which contradicts (1) because of the conditions on bb's and dd's.
